How to make new friends in a new city without it feeling like a dating app

You moved to a new city, the job is sorted and the flat is furnished. Then comes the first Friday with nobody to message.

Editorial sample. Evergreen guidance only — no live listings, rankings or event claims.

Making friends as an adult feels oddly hard even when nothing is actually wrong. The reason is structural: at school and university you saw the same people every day without anyone arranging it. In a new city you have to build that repetition yourself.

Repetition beats first impressions

One good conversation with a stranger is a nice evening. The same person three times in a month is the start of a friendship. So choose things you can come back to: the same training slot, the same library café, the same weekly group.

A low threshold beats a grand gesture

  • Suggest something short and bounded: an hour of coffee is easier than a whole evening.
  • Say what you are doing instead of asking vaguely whether to "do something sometime".
  • Give the other person an easy way to say no — it makes saying yes easier.
  • Invite a third person. In a group of three nobody has to carry the conversation alone.

Without the dating assumption

Most of the awkwardness of meeting new people comes from neither side knowing what the other is after. Say plainly that you are looking for people to do things with, not dates, and the pressure disappears for both of you. The same goes in apps: say what you are doing, don't present yourself like a CV.

Give it three months

A social life in a new city does not appear in two weeks, and that does not mean you are doing it wrong. Give the repetitions time: the same places, the same evenings and the same faces slowly start to feel like yours.
