How to make friends in a new city: practical first steps

Start with a place you would visit again, then turn a conversation into a small, clear invitation.

If you have just moved, the problem is often not a lack of possible friends but a lack of familiar routines. Different cities offer different kinds of meeting places; no one app or class works everywhere.

Choose a place worth returning to

Look for a library programme, a volunteer group, a community class or a hobby gathering. Choose an activity you actually enjoy, then check the local organiser’s details. Seeing the same people again gives a conversation a chance to continue.

Turn a conversation into a small invitation

Suggest something specific and easy to decline: coffee after class or a walk in a public park. If someone says no, accept it without trying to turn the invitation into a sales pitch for friendship.

Know what kind of connection you want

Friendship, dating and finding an activity partner are different goals. Say what you mean, especially in an app. When meeting someone you only know online, choose a public place and tell someone you trust where you are going.

What the research does and does not tell us

Pew Research Center’s 2025 study describes how adults in the United States turn to friends, family and partners for support. It is not a worldwide measure of loneliness or evidence that a particular app solves it. Use such research to ask better questions, not to diagnose your own social life.

A local starting point

SHOUTR DISCOVER helps you find nearby people, LIVE is one shared local conversation and POP-UP is for spontaneous plans. These are ways to start talking, not a guarantee of activity wherever you move. Offline groups are just as valid a place to start.
